What separates the great pitchers (Santana, Peavy) from the average pitchers in baseball?

What do the elite do differently?|||Location- Pitchers like Greg Maddux has had a Hall of fame career by hitting the right spots at the right time.

Movement- The best pitchers don't always throw the hardest though it helps. Aaron Harang only throws in the low 90s, but his fastball moves a lot, so it is hard to track. Whereas, at this point, Tom Gordon's fastball which is more in the mid 90s just goes straight and that is why he is afraid to throw it in the strike zone.

Setting up a batter- Keep them off balance, by changing speeds and locations. That is why the best can make hitters look so bad. I have seen Cole Hamels make batters look ridiculous with his changeup because he sets it up.

Pressure and confidence- Big games, trust your stuff to get the out. Forget the past.

In short, a lot.|||Control better, have more speed or break, smarter, have more pitches i guess.|||Yeah its all about location and pitching IQ.

If you stay on the corners, batters have alot more trouble squaring up the ball and hitting for power. Also, even though they have over powering stuff they still pick their spots to challenge the hitter. You aren't going to blow every batter away, effective use of off speed pitches mixed in with well located fastballs is the key to keeping the hitters off balance.|||control, and being able to fool hitters by changing speed. thats about it. Having good movement on off speed pitchers are key, and if you can hit locations like the great ones your set.|||BRAIN AND SKILL TO WIN THE BIG GAMES.|||It comes down to pitch selection and location. A great pitcher will know the count and what to throw the batter. A great pitcher also will have the control to hit a spot. The one other thing that great pitchers have is memory. Great pitchers forget what just happened and take every pitch individually while remembering the weaknesses of every batter they face.|||Location, Location and more Location. There are tons of pitchers who throw 95 MPH and there are tons of pitchers who have sharp breaking balls. Daniel Cabrera from the Orioles is an Elite athelete who can touch 100 MPH with his fastball but last year he had one of the leagues worst ERAs. The reason is he has no clue where that 100 MPH fastball is goin. Santana tops out at 93-94 MPH but can put that pitch anywhere he wants it within probably an inch or two.|||Command of their pitches, control, movement of the ball, and knowledge of the hitters gives these two pitchers an added advantage over most other pitchers.|||THe biggest thing that they have that an average pitcher has is not control or excessive spped...it is knowledge of how to pitch istead of just throwing. You need control, speed helps but pitching is a something different. You take someone like Greg Maddux who has never had overpowering stuff but has been a fabulous pitcher because he knows how to pitch, what pitch is right in what situation, what the batter will bite on, what spot to hit in the count. Peavy, Santana, Webb these are all pitchers who get this, they understand that pitching is an art form and a match of wits, they come prepared and get the job done...if Felix Hernandez ever finally gets this he will be UNREAL...he is a thrower not a pitcher because he is relying solely on god given ability and no thought to try and win.|||what separates ellite pitchers from really good pitchers is consistancy. Just take a look at some performances so far this year. Sheets has gone something like 15 1/3 innings without giving up a run, but he next time out he might get shelled. You basically know what you are getting from Santana and Peavy every single time they take the mound. That is why they are probably the two best pitchers in baseball.|||Heart! The desire to win and the willingness to work at being the best you can be. It's no secret!|||Poise, control, trust to throw all their pitches at anytime in the count, and better than average pitches (more than 2 pitches). And one exceptional "out" pitch.|||It's the same thing that seperates great real estate from average real estate - location, location, location. The great ones put the ball exactly where they want to with pinpoint accuracy and control.|||HGH
