Why did the Yankees front office pull Hughes out of the Johan Santana trade negotiations?

Who the hell do they think they are? they can pull hughes out and still get minnesota to accept?|||First of all, the Twins were completely trying to "rape" the Yankees, with the help of the Red Sox. The original offer made by the Yankees was the best offer anyone could have made for a player with Santana's stats. They insisted on Melky and Hughes, then Ian Kennedy. That's all due to the Red Sox desire to completely control the AL East. Even with the start they had they almost collapsed and the Yankees almost took the East. The Red Sox made a deal so weak for Santana, including Coco Crisp and Jon Lester, the Twins couldn't make that deal because they would expose that they were in cohoots with MLB to keep the Yankees down!!! It's just a thought!!! Good for the Mets!!!!|||they probably were never all that serious about trying to get him or they would have made a much better offer, like one that involved two of those young pitchers they were so high up on

if they had really wanted to make sure they got santana then they would have quickly moved to make an offer the twins couldnt refuse, in lieu of such a deal one just has to assume the yankees only made an offer to the twins in an attempt to stay relevant during the offseason and so that when they choke this year they can at least say "well we tried to get santana"|||It was obvious the yankees and red sox never really wanted him. They were in a bidding war just to prevent each other from picking him up. Also johan wanted to play in the NL. It is easier to pitch against and also he has a hidden secret. He likes to hit. I am a die hard yankees fan but lets be real, our pitching problem is not going to be solved by buying the best pitcher on the market. It has NOT worked in the past 5 years. We will be just as good without him especally 5 or 6 years down the road.|||The Yankees were not willing to give up their young talent to get Santana. It was a risk either way, Santana could get hurt and cost you alot of young talent, or since they decided to keep the young guns, these prospects could turn out to be flops. The Yankees are banking on the fact that Hughes and Joba have the potential to be "Santana-like" pitchers in the future. Hey, take it easy, this is like the first time ever that the yankees havent gone out and gotten the best player in baseball by offering him a bashillion dollars. See what its like to actually grow your own talent, and who knows, the yankees might actually win something for a change!...but not for a long time, because the Red Sox have already gone through the whole growing talent phase, and now they have a powerhouse team that is all under contract for the next season and seasons to come.|||Well, they accepted the Mets and you didn't see Hughes in that deal, did you?

They didn't want to lose Hughes and they think they are the Yankees and they didn't really care inf the Twins accepted unless it was on the Yankees terms.|||Remember they said if Torre didn't win that series, that he wouldn't be back, then offered him this much reduced, incentive laden contract that everyone knew was insulting just to save face.

I am by no means a Yankee fan, but I am actually proud of them for no trying to get Santana (ew, I think I just threw up a little inside when I said proud)

From them, I wouldn't have even settled on Hughes, it would have been Chamberlain and one of Hughes and Kennedy.

They decided to keep their prospects and develop them and potentially miss the playoffs this year to start to repair the chemistry that is missing.

Good for them.|||Philip Hughes Is The New York Yankees Franchise Player.|||Acquiring Johan Santana would require Hughes, Melky Cabrera, and the Twins wanted a few more good prospects. Because Santana is only signed for 2008, the Yankees would also have had to throw in about $150 million to sign him. Sure, the Yankees might have a lot of money but $150 million for anyone is a large sum. I'm frankly glad that they kept Hughes. He could turn out to be better than Santana in the future. He could of course turn out to be worse, but Santana to the Mets was NOT the worst case scenario for the Yankees and I would not consider them stupid for deciding to keep their younger talent that could turn out to be more valuable in the future.

After all, Phil Hughes was the top pitching prospect in baseball for one, maybe two years.|||they thought huges had too much potential to give up for johan with everyone else they were going to give him.
