Johan Santana was acquired by the Mets, but the deal hasn't been completed yet, they have until 5pm Friday to get a deal done. Let me know your thoughts.|||It will be huge for the Mets. It would turn them from a playoff contender to a championship contender. They had to give up four good young prospects to acquire possibly the best pitcher in baseball, and it will pay off for them.|||Big impact on the Mets. They are getting a prize pitcher.|||Johan as we all know is the best pitcher in the MLB.
he'll have 20+ wins, era in the low 2's and be the front runner to win the 2008 NL Cy Young.|||These questions are getting boring. I'm just going to answer all of the Santa questions here
TO ALL THAT WANT TO KNOW IF JOHAN SANTA WAS A GOOD DEAL: yes, for the mets
TO ALL THAT WANT THOUGHTS ON THIS ACQUISITION: it was very good for the mets
TO ALL THAT WANT THOUGHTS ON THE FAIRNESS OF THIS DEAL: extremely out of balance
sorry for taking my frustration out on your question|||As a hardcore Met fan this answer may be a bit bias but as a hardcore Met fan I can tell you why we are very optimistic about our team next year....Johan will have a huge impact....
Last year we believed we were one of the top teams in the NL. No one in the NL really has improved that much to make us think otherwise.
The major reason why our team faultered last year the way it did was because of poor starting pitching and the bullpen. Our starters last year rarely pitched into the 7th inning and many times had problems even reaching the 6th. This over-worked the bullpen early and often in the season. By the time the home stretch came about in September all of our relivers were tired and ineffective. Our offense contributed to our struggles at the end of the season as well but there were a lot of winnable games that our pitching could not keep us in the game.
Santana gives us a #1 starter that is capable of pitching well into the 7th and 8th inning and will not only provide us with 20-30 quality starts throughout the year but will probably even pitch a few CG's which will help out our bullpen enormously.
(We also get our setup man in Duaner Sanchez back which will help our bullpen as well)
Mets fans are very optimistic about next year. We don't act like Santana will pitch all 162 games. But he will make an impact that will last all 162 games by bringing to the team a feared #1 starter, eating up innings, saving the bullpen from being overworked and being a good clubhouse presence.
I think if any team in the leauge got Santana they would be overly optimistic too. Only time will tell how well the Santana investment turned out to be. Hope this helps...
