How do you think the Met's aquiring Johan Santana from the Twins will help them this season?

Just curious to see how much of an impact Johan Santana will have on the Mets this season.

I think he's gonna be a big help to the team, but I don't think he's going to be as big a help as people are thinking, because he pitches every 5 games.|||The thing about Santana that I like the most is that he lost a lot of his games last year by scores of 2-1, 1-0, 3-2. And the Twins did not have a good offense. The combination of Santana pitching in a BIG ballpark (Shea is considered to be a pitcher's park) and the Mets offense will be a huge help.

Santana himself even admits that his heart wasn't too into it at the end of last year with the Twins because of all the trade talk and the fact that the Twins weren't doing particularly well.

Plus a few other factors.. a good rotation around him.. a full of year a healthy Pedro, two 15 game winners (Maine and Perez), veteran leadership from El Duque, a bullpen that is undeniably better than last year (2007 - Mota and Sele vs. 2008 - Sanchez and Padilla), a catcher who calls a better game.. Schneider over Lo Duca. All these things work in the favor of Santana.

The NL line-ups are weaker than the AL. That's another thing that will help him.|||He's gonna be the one to break those losing streaks, but he's bound to start wearing down as he enters his 30s|||well adding the best pitcher in baseball tends to help pretty significantly. its fairly self explainatory. If you think pitching isnt that important because they only play every five days than you know very little about the game of baseball.|||Santana is one of the top few pitchers in the game and any team would be better with him. The Mets could have won last year and came up just one game short. With Santana the Mets might have the best team in the NL.|||Since the Mets only missed the post season by 1 game last year, Santana certainly makes them a post-season favorite even before the season begins. He'll almost certainly be better than Glavine, the man he effectively replaces. He pitched pretty deep into games in the AL and therefore should go at least as long in the NL since the NL has weaker lineups. This will allow the Mets bullpen, which was tremendously overworked last year, to have more rest. All these factors should make the Mets a much better pitching team than they were last year.|||All starters only pitch every 5 games, if they weren't valuable, they wouldn't get those huge contracts.

Remember, Santana doesn't replace the old #1 pitcher, he replaces the 5th pitcher.

If your 5th starter wins 10 games, with an era under 5, you are pretty happy.

Santana should bring 18 to 20 wins with an era under 3.

Given those #'s, that's a lot easier on your bullpen.

And even if Santana himself doesn't win, the team is in a better position to win.

If the mets won an additional 8-10 games, what would have happened.

Well, the phillies don't get in and perhaps, the mets make it to the world series.|||Solidifies the top spot on the staff with a bonafide 18-22 game winner, who can chew up innings. Will allow the bullpen to mostly have a game of not having to be used often, and those days add up on arms during the season. The club went from a division contender to NL title contender. This is a major arm who can impact a team.|||One good pitcher wont do much,

but if the Met's decide to sign some more quality pitchers they'll be pretty strong.

like the tigers in '06, they dominated pitching with rogers, robertson, zumaya and jones (and many others).|||Not so much his age to worry about, it's more along the lines of getting hurt. He's going to do very well for a good amount of years, however he is due for a big injury. The flipside of the coin is that he is a mule, and chances are he won't get hurt.|||he is definately going to help. But what people forget is that he is just a 6 inning pitcher. He averaged less than 7 innings for his entire career. mets better do something about the bullpen or they will be burned out by the All-Star break.|||He may pitch every 5th game but just having one of best pitchers in baseball today will be an asset to the Mets team|||Not At All Hes Gonna Choke, Good Luck.|||He pitches every 5 games, and he went 15-13... and gave up the most home runs in the league last year- 33?... He is a Great Pitcher! Dont get me wrong.. but he might need to pick it up this season if they want some help.|||I think he will help quite a bit. Coming from the AL Central, most of his NL East opponents haven't had to deal with him much, if at all. He has a wicked change-up that's going to fool a lot of batters. As a White Sox fan I have one other thing to say: Good riddance!|||In the short term - he improves them tremendously - bringing in the best pitcher in the game to an already decent team helps a lot

In the long term - that contract will kill them - years 5-7 are going to be rough on the Mets|||As a Twins fan, I'm having a hard time picturing him at the plate. It'll be interesting to see his effect from the offensive.
