Why is Johan Santana having such a bad year?

Yes, he's 14-10 which some would say is a decent record, but for Santana? He's suppose to be in the running for the Cy Young Award.

I know he hasn't been getting much run support, but can't the number on how many homerunes he's given up!

Is this just still a bad year for him? Is he still worth alot? How good does a pitcher have to be to throw only fastballs, changeups, and rarely a slider?|||This shows why using just wins to determine if someone is having a good or bad year is short-sighted.

Santana is currently #3 in the AL in ERA, #1 in WHIP, #2 in hits allowed, #2 in strikeouts...and #8 in wins.

In 2005 he was 3rd in Cy Young votes and lost to Bartolo Colon, he was better than Colon in the following:

ERA, WHIP, Hits per 9 innings, hit allowed, strikeouts, innings, complete games, shutouts, strikeouts to walks, games started, adjusted ERA…yet Colon had more wins. So he had the “better year.”

Johann is fine. The Twins bats are not.

By the way, in 1987 Nolan Ryan led the league in ERA (and a bunch of other stats). He went 8 and 16.|||cause the twins won't get off the dime.|||You can tell he's not getting much offense by the amount of decisions he's getting, but lack of wins.

He's got great stuff and he's going deep into ballgames, but the Twins as a whole are underachieving.

He's not having that bad of a season, mainly because his ERA (3.06) is pretty low and he just set a career-high for K's in a game (200 K's for the season).|||Your guess is as good as mine. He's way too good for that kind of record. The Twins are zilch without him, and will go home this year at season's end. Look for him to be an ex-Twin this winter. . . .|||It's mainly run support. The Twins are known to be a bad team offensively, and Santana's ERA is around 3.00, yet still has 10 losses. He's been pitching lots of innings and getting lots of strikeouts. He has given up 29 homeruns, which is very surprising. But at closer inspection, only 8 of them have not been solo homeruns. This means he isn't giving up that many 2-3 run homers. He's having an off year by his standards, but is still in the Cy Young race.|||Even a great pitcher like Santana doesn't always have things go his way. He's had to be a little more aggressive due to the lack of Twins run support. When pitchers tend to get more aggressive, they tend to get hit a bit more.

But if this is what his off year looks like, just imagine when he comes back strong next year.|||because the twins aren't helping him offensively|||i don't think this year is horrible.

remember that 17 strikeout game he had? haha

i still love the guy, it's just that fans are spoiled ;)

he's been putting up GREAT numbers before.

and this yr he's still good..just not as good as previous yrs|||Is he having a bad year, or is he just having a bad year vs the Cleveland Indians? You can account for 5 losses ,as you know, just at the hands of Cleveland. Is he still worth alot? When he leaves Twins after 2008 you will find out.|||5 of his 11 lossess this year are against the Indians. He has his offense and the Tribe to thank for his record.|||I guess hes just trying to get minisota to trade him with tori hunter
