It would be tough to give up talent like Phil Hughes, but without Santana, I'm not sure they can compete with the rest of the A.L. Boston, Cleveland, and LA all have great staffs, and the Tigers are loaded.|||Santana has been the best pitcher in baseball for the last 5 years. Phil Hughes is an interesting prospect, but he is still only a prospect. There is no guarantee he's going to pan out and perform the way Santana is likely to do over the next 5 years. Given how mediocre the Yankees' pitching staff is, they should have made that trade.|||Well no i think they dint make a Mistake , i think they dint get Santana because they dint want to push it and give Hughes, Melky or Kennedy and at the moment it doesnt look good but it will be worth it at the end
The Staff we will have to see those 5 guys are the Starter and those are the people with have to go to war with and hope for the Best|||I think it depends on who they will start this season and how they perform. Besides they have Wang and Pettitte, two good pitchers.|||No. The Twins were demanding two front line starting pitchers for one year of Santana. And then Santana was demanding 7 years at %26gt;$20 mil a year. No way you commit that much to a pitcher, no matter how good he is.
He'll end up on DL and Mets will continue to be the biggest high-priced disappointment in the bigs.|||They might have. There have been reports that the Twins made last ditch efforts to make a deal with the Bombers. I read a few that said the Twinkies would take Kennedy, Melky and a top prospect(not named Joba or Hughes) for Santana. If this is true, the Yanks made a big mistake not pulling the trigger on that one.|||No, sorry but they still would have done bad with him.
I don't dislike the Yankees, i just dislike Santana.|||im glad they didnt cuz they wouldve lost melky and some other really good players and i really like Melky hes really really good|||Not really, they have a good pitching staff already.|||ahhhh. they're ganna have their work cut out for em for sure. i love the yankees and thats hard for me to say but i dont even know if i seethe playoffs in their future......|||no they didn麓t, giving up melky, hughes and other player, no mistake, actually that was a good call from cashman to not trade for santana, and I think they got the material to compete against those teams.|||definitely....i would have rather the yankees had him because he couldve gone farther with the yanks and the mets aint got much to offer....plus...i freakin hate the mets.|||For once they finally got it right. For the money they would have to spend signing him (remembering giving him$20m/yr would really be $28m due to luxury tax) and what they would have to give up it made no sense to push harder. Of course No yankee fan in their right mind would say they wouldn't love having Johan front the rotation, but there is an issue of cost in $ and talent. It was going to take more than Hughes and Melky, probably Kennedy as well. Granted the pitchers are still basically prospects, but the upside is high, maybe Hughes as a #2 starter and Kennedy a solid #4 in the next couple of years. During that time prior to free agencey eligibility they will cost less in total combined than Johan for 1 year. To replace them for the same time frame would be around $80m bare bones minimum. A #2 and #4 starter for 8 years at 80m is a steal these days. Then they would have to deal with CF. Damon could go back and there are a pair of OF prospects in the pipeline but neither is ready yet. Plus Damon is likely gone after 09' so it would be a short term fix. Melky is still a kid that has put up assists with Vlad and Ichiro, covers a lot of ground and is still just a kid and developing at the plate. He'll never be an Andruw Jones/Torri Hunter type guy in all liklihood but he is solid enough to anchor an outfield, especially on a team that can give some O for good defense. Plus he's cheap. The other factor is a deal like Johan got is a huge risk, one arm problem, one freak accident hanging a curtain, and he could be done or not nearly as effective. It's a gamble to invest that heavily in any pitcher long term. NY couldn't win with the fans on this no matte what they did. If they gave up youth for Johan people would complain (especially if they pan out big) b/c NY fans have been all about keeping the prospects in house. They keep the kids and they don't pan in a few years they'll call it the blunder of the century, or more likely as soon as Johan beats them in the subway series this year.|||NO! Hughes has the same type of talent as Santana. To give him up would have been a major mistake. Santana still has arm issues whether the Twins, Mets and the media wants to admit it or not. It is very possible that Santana could blow up at mid season and the Mets will be on the hook for $150M.
Joba is supposed to eventually start for the Yankees. I was able to see him live three times last season not to mention a number of times on TV. This guy is the real deal!
Cashman is not done yet as we go into spring training. There might still be a blockbuster in the works if I know the Yankees.
The Yankees are just fine. They will contend as they always do. I think a lot of team plan on taking them lightly this season and I hope they do. If they do it could be the biggest mistake they make. Never short change the Bronx Bombers!|||I believe the yanks did make a mistake. There main struggle is the pitching aspect of the game so why wouldnt they push harder for the 2 time cy young winner? They would lose hughes, melky and other prospects but come on its the yankees, they can afford anyone they want so why would they stop there tradition here.|||It seems to me that the Twins' did not want Santana to play for either the Yankees or Red Sox, because both of their offers were better than what the Mets gave to the Twins. They wanted him in the NL, so he doesn't go back there to haunt them.
I don't think it had anything to do with a lack of effort on Brian Cashman's part.
