Why is it that nobody seems to think of the possibility that the Twins keep Johan Santana?

All that anybody on the national sports networks talks about is that the Twins must trade Johan Santana. I believe that the Twins can keep him because of the deep pockets of Carl Pohlad. Why is it that nobody wants to see Santana in Minnesota?|||The Twins already offered Santana a 4-year deal with $20 million per season. Santana promptly turned that offer down seeking, a longer and more lucrative deal.

Although Carl Pohlad has the wealth to retain Santana, he's proven time and time again that he is willing to spend his money.

As such, it is in the best interest of the Twins to trade Santana before the season starts for the best package they can get. The other option is to hold onto him until the trade deadline, but if Santana is having a down season or is injured, it seriously limits what the Twins could get in return for a trade. It is also possible no one would make the trade, but rather chose to sign him at the end of the season without having to sacrifice any talent of their own.

My best bet is that Santana will get traded. The Red Sox have a very solid offer on the table with Coco Crisp, Jon Lester, Justin Masterson and Jed Lowrie. The Mets, if the reports are even remotely close to accurate are willing to send three of their top four pitching prospects and Carlos Gomez, the Twins would like Fernando Martinez as well and that is currently the sticking point.

I'd love for Santana to stay as well, but baseball is as much a business as it is a game and Santana deserves to get paid and the Twins--thanks to Pohlad's frugality--can't afford to keep him.

Good Question.

EDIT: Why is it that people give answers that don't have any real facts in them, just opinion without any logic or knowledge to back it up and then I get thumbs down from those same people after I give a well-thought out and factually accurate answer.|||he aint going anywhere but to the Mets........the mets are the only stupid team to trade there whole farm system to get him....its either mets or no one at all.....|||Santana isn't going anywhere. The Twins doesn't like the other teams offerings.|||twins may keep him this year.... however he has already told management that he will not resign with the twinkies. therefore, if they want anything of value for him they must trade him.|||The main reason is that the Twins have already indicated they are not willing to pay Santana his market value when his contract ends after the 2008 season. It gets back to the ownership and their philosophy of how to run a team, all at the expense of the fans. The one underlying issue is their new ballpark that is being constructed and their is a small possibility ownership might reconsider and try to keep him. What a gift that would be to the fans when the go to the new ballpark.|||They can't afford to keep him. If they do, next year he is free agent and they lose him to highest bidder anyway. If they trade hime now, get some good prospects and young players to start immediately, they are better off. Minnesota is a medium market with about a $70 million payroll. He is too expensive for them. They need to worry about resigning J. Mourneau and extending J Maur and build around F. Liriano|||They will let him go for a two prospects, and one everyday player. It just makes sense in the long run. I doubt he will finish the season with the Twins if in fact he even starts the season with the twins.

I am a little surprised the Red Sox did not send over a centerfielder for him already.|||I do.

I think the best of chance is the Twins. Me and my bud and discussed this and we both agree he stays.

I think the Mets got the second best shot because they are willing to give up a lot.|||baseball is a business and a player does not a team make...the twins can possibly get a few future stars and money and mr. santana can also get money %26amp; maybe a better team[no disrespect to the tiwns]|||I think they will hold on to Santana for a while longer. Because the Twins are building a new stadium. Unless a team comes up with some good prospects. And I mean more than 1 player. Than I think the Twins will keep him. It would be hard to sell tickets to a stadium that doesn't have a future.|||Are you kidding? Castillo left, Hunter left, Liriano left basically with his TJ surgery. Nathan is about to skip town. Why should he stay? The Twins home attendance was pathetic last season. The Twins aren't going near the playoffs in a tough AL league. Why should Santana stay? KG left Minnesota and Johan will follow suit. Minnesota is a wrestling state not a baseball/basketball/football state. Say bye to Johan, hopefully to the Yanks.|||The Twins want to keep Johan, but there is almost NO way that Pohlad is going to dish up the money. He is too greedy of an owner.

Being a Twins fan, I would love to see Santana stay, but you have to think about it too. If we keep Johan, then we will be paying ALOT of extra money that we could be using on other players like, Cuddyer, Mauer, Morneau, and so on.

Not to mention, we currently have holes in our field, and roster that we could fill up for trading Johan. If we traded him we could get good young players, and we would have more money also.

But unless Carl actually decides to spend money on the team, then he is as good as gone.|||It comes down to simple economics. The Twins CAN re-sign Santana, but it would leave so little else in terms of money in the player budget to give current and future players that they can't afford to give him the $25 Million (ish) per year that he is seeking. The bigger market teams (Mets, Yankees, Red Sox) could much mure easliy ablsorb his contract in addition signing other players.|||because twins publicly shopped him which makes keeping him harder. i am all for twins keeping him. they should have kept torry too but owner has short arms and deep pockets.
